1) As you read, use a highlighter and/or post-it notes to annotate the text, paying particular attention to passages you feel illustrate the increasing awareness or self-awareness and to passages where the author gives advice.
2) Record his advice about what to keep in your writing toolbox in outline format or in a PowerPoint Presentation.
Creative Writing: The Stephen King Writing Exercise
In chapter 5 of On Writing, Stephen King describes a writing scenario and offers an exercise: “to change the sexes of the antagonist and protagonist before beginning to work out the situation in your narrative—make the ex-wife the stalker, in other words (perhaps it’s a mental institution she’s escaped from instead of the city jail), the husband the victim. Narrate this without plotting—let the situation and that one unexpected inversion carry you along” (Chapter 5). Your assignment is to complete this exercise, using all the tools from your toolbox, as Stephen King advises.
Note: If ever you need help or feedback at any stage of the writing process or with any part of the summer reading and journal assignments, please feel free to email me at ngranado@ebtbrooklyn.com. Use your time wisely!
