Overview: According to New York City High School Scope and Sequence Core Curriculum, “The New York City Department of Education strives to prepare all students to live rich, literate lives and to be active, informed citizens. In order to do so, students need access to rigorous, comprehensive, and engaging English Language Arts curricula. Students should have the opportunity to read a variety of texts, make informed judgments that are grounded in evidence and communicate their thinking through oral, written, and artistic expressions.” To achieve this goal, this course contains three units of study that are guided by essential questions and key objectives; the units require students to read a variety of texts from various genres and literary canons, to write narratives, informational and analytical essays, and source-based arguments, and to perform in both oral and dramatic presentations.

Units include but are not limited to:

Unit 1: Short Stories & Gothic Literature
How do we analyze and dramatize short stories?
In this collection, students will learn how to analyze short stories and present their interpretations and analysis in essays or short writing pieces, oral commentaries, and dramatizations.

Unit 2: Mythology & Drama
How do we analyze and dramatize myths, fiction based on myths, and plays?
In this collection, students will learn how to analyze myths and plays and present their interpretations and analysis in essays or short writing pieces, oral commentaries, and dramatizations.

Unit 3: Fake News & Research
How do we distinguish fake news from legitimate sources in order to conduct and write research?
In this collection, students will learn how to analyze media for credibility and conduct research to write a position paper and/or present a TED Talk.

Required Materials:

  • Pens for daily writing
  • #2 pencils with erasers for assessments
  • Loose-leaf paper for notes and written assignments
  • 1 binder to store work and the supply of loose leaf
  • An active email, Gmail, and Google Drive account

Recommended Materials:

  • 1 flash drive or thumb drive with amply storage
  • Binder tabs for separate sections or subject areas
  • Highlighters for in-text annotations
  • Post-It notes for text-on-text annotations
  • A pocket thesaurus and/or dictionary
